First Snow

2/8/2019

it snowed last night
the first of the season
the trees are beautiful with
layers of white covering
the roughhewn branches

the blanketed ground
sparkles and shines
it invites children to
create snow angels
and snowmen

those lucky enough to have a hill
slither and slide in glee
tearing down the incline
roaring and screaming
with delight

as a child we opened the fence
that kept the cows and bulls
from wandering onto our property
now they are safely ensconced in the barn
for the winter allowing us safe passage

to slide down their hill
zigzagging around the cow pies
left throughout the summer
frozen, they cause us to bump
and fly just enough to
make us squeal more and more

Frozen crystalline pines
on rare fluid mountains
over white windswept canyon
majestic hawk suspended on air

carried to balance on granite

live the dance of joy and transmutation
bring the sweetness of life to light

take courage from the caterpillar
that wraps itself into a cocoon

knowing that change
does not have to be traumatic

it can be gentle and joyful
trust that your being will survive

believe in the cycle of life
which will take care of you

through all the changes
that approach

be willing to move ahead
fly on your wings of love

Santa

Christmas tree glows through the window
twinkling it's message of hope
for all passing by to see
little glows, candles twinkling messages of peace

icicle streamers shine brightly in the light
each strand a labor of love
thrown into the open arms of the tree
grasped tightly to keep them from falling

as each one lands
the tree quivers in delight
knowing it will bring joyful glee to child and adult
one can almost hear the tinkling laughter
of the hopeful children
whose wonder-filled eye
gaze into the lights
knowing "The Man" will arrive tonight

Leopard

leopard in the wild
living within the moment
has the ability to tap
into her vitality and live fully

she reflects my opportunity
to find my own life force
and drink from it without
becoming enmeshed in my old patterns

I am discovering my power and renewed energy
finding the capability and opportunity
to conquer my own great demons

I hold on to the strength and power
provided by this new knowledge
I will be vibrant and thrive

Playful Dog

dog playing in colorful autumn leaves
jumping and rolling
I can almost hear him laugh
burying himself then leaping up for all to see
what fun he is having
may I live life like the playful dog
no worries about yesterday, today or tomorrow

cast those thoughts into the abyss
where all negativity thrives
dwell in the moment, right now, this second
enjoy all that life creates for you

My Mother's Kitchen

11/3/2018

my mother's kitchen was not hers alone
she bore a large family and had the oldest girls
bake cherry pies and chocolate cakes
while she fixed huge meals

Once, I put a peanut butter sandwich
in the broiler, just to see if it would melt
when it started smoking
I ran and hid

I loved rolling out pizza dough
snitching tastes whenever I could
and the Italian smell of spaghetti
still makes me hungry

the oven stands
against the far wall
surrounded by cupboards
I used to wash for fifty cents

the wall by the door has a mural of a windmill
and trees full of summer's green
which mimics the country view
outside the window

looking at the mural
I can almost see the children
climbing trees and playing tag
I listen to their happy laughter

my mother's kitchen was not hers alone
she shared it with the love of all

who passed through

Moving Forward

filled with pools of light
this peace touches me with open possibilities

shining through the windows of my mind
I finally fathom the simple fortune afforded me by loving life

I must clear blocks to happiness
knock down my villain-esque rituals

of negative thoughts
and harboring memories of a painful past

touch truth and love through faith in myself
helped by those surrounding me

friends and family teach me to appreciate
my gifts and abilities

give me strength to face all that life sends
help me accept the joy that can be mine

thankful for their help
I repay by living life exuberantly

Fear Conquered

10/1/2018

As a youth Brownie bit sister Lois
the next day he was gone.
Mom said “I took him to a farm
where he will be loved and cared for.”

on the way home from church
walking past the scary barn
the ragged dog broke his chain
came after us, knocked me down
stood over me growling and chomping.
I feared for my life

I brought this distress over dogs
with me everywhere I went
unable to be around any dog
even the smallest yapping ones

Pam had a huge greyhound.
due to previous abuse
he was afraid of everything
one day he came over to me
and just stood there trembling

if he could overcome his fear
in the hope of receiving love,
I could do the same

petting him we both
overcame our fear
and became friends
