Life’s Memories

by Joan Moos

I count the years in lilacs
adorning the landscape each spring
with a fragrance that memory cannot deny.

I count the years by the red summer rose,
its beauty etched in my mind.

I count the years by the color and perfume
of the dry leaves of autumn,
crinkling beneath my feet.

I count the years by the clear air of winter,
reaching up my nostrils,
sharpening my view of the ice and snow crystals
sparkling in the crisp, cold air.

Seasons come and go . . .
blending into years . . .
Beauty begets memories . . .
Memories reflect a lifetime.

HIDDEN MEMORIES

Musical memories
are held in my mind,
stored in a place
that is quite hard to find.

Then one day a
song that I hear,
brings a memory in focus …
so perfectly clear.

It just slips out
as though it were new.
Just a song from the past,
and I'm right back with you.

A couple of notes,
Just one little word
revives my memory
just as soon as it’s heard.

I recall every word,
every note from the past,
for somehow my mind
holds each measure fast.

With the music in me
I know I'll never grow old,
as the notes and the words
help my past to unfold.

A Message To My Forebearers

by Joan Moos
I often sit and think about
how you would feel today,
If you could see how man has risen,
and the earth has slipped away.

Now we fly across the seas.
Man has flown to the moon and back.
The speed of sound has been broken
with a loud and thunderous “crack”!

Life as you knew it has passed.
I’m not sure if that’s good or bad.
In many ways life is easier
from what you might have had.

But sometimes ‘simple’ is better
than the gadgets now at hand.
It’s always a loving family
that really makes life grand.

Autumn Snapshots

12/16/2017

by Joan Moos

Armed with my camera,
I head out
on this blindingly sunny day
in a desperate final attempt
to capture
the warmth and beauty
that are embracing me.
I know, all too well, that tomorrow
all the colorful forms that combine
to make up this picturesque masterpiece
called autumn
will be gone with the rain,
and the force of the wind,
and we shall be left with
only the cold, barren landscape
that summons the arrival of winter.
As the curtain rises on Act IV, “Winter,”
then shall I retreat into my cocoon
by the warming embers of the fire.
There I will look through, and hold on to
the last glorious vestiges of autumn,
through each snapshot,
as time, for awhile, stands still,
and I relive the beauty of yesterday
and renew my spirit.
